The year was 1952, and the missionary surgeon, Albert Schweitzer, won the Nobel Peace Prize, while a vaccine for polio was developed by Dr Jonas Salk. The US Navy began construction of the first nuclear submarine, whilst in the UK, Londoners said goodbye to the last tram and the average weekly wage rose to £7.58. In Los Angeles, American actress, Molly Malone, star of the silent film era, dies aged 63.

And the Macallan released exactly 465 bottles of this amazing whiskey, worldwide.
