The year was 1947, and the US Congress proceedings are televised for the first time, and, after 90 years of British rule, both Pakistan and India gain their independence. In New York, Edwin Land demonstrates his new Polaroid Land Camera, while the first Volkswagen Beetle arrives in the US. The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank is published and, in the UK, Princess Elizabeth marries the Duke of Edinburgh.
And The Macallan released exactly 270 bottles of this incredible whisky released worldwide.
This Fine & Rare Whisky is something of an oddity - this Macallan 1947 was originally bottled for Italy in 1962 as a fifteen year-old. More than 40 years later, it was then re-bottled for the Fine & Rare range at 45.4% ABV
This is likely to be more peaty than today's Macallan, as the distillery was forced to use peat in the kilns for a few years during and after WWII because of the scarcity and high price of coal.
The Macallan Fine & Rare 1947 Cask 1962 Tasting Notes:
Aroma: The nose is peated with citrus fruits, chocolate orange and vanilla, atop an oaky background note.
Palate: The palate brings light fruits and peat with bitter chocolate and wood spice.
Finish: A peaty finish with lingering fruits.
