Until recently you would rarely find this whisky bottled separately, as most of the distilleryâs production has been channeled into Dewarâs blends, and it was a rather rare sight to see an official bottling of Craigellachie single malt. Well after years of waiting, in 2014, four turned up all at once! But now there is a new emphasis on the individuality of this Speyside spiritâa contrast of meaty and floral characteristics.
Part of Craigellachieâs uniqueness lies in the fact that the distillery still uses old-fashioned worm tubs, a practice that not only adds extra flavor to the spirit but creates whiskies that taste older than they really are.
While the Craigellachie 17 Year Old retains the brandâs bold and unadulterated flavors, and meaty character of the spirit the distillery is known for. This whisky is sweet and slightly smoky with hints of vanilla and exotic fruits and a slow, smoky finish reminiscent of the Craigellachie 23 Year Old.
Tasting Notes:
Nose / Aroma: opens with vanilla and baked apples aromas
Taste: very sweet up front. Waves of velvety custard cream followed by a rich smoke note
Finish: medium in length with a soft smoke lingering
