On a rock overlooking the river Spey sits a distillery called Craigellachie. At night, when the moon is full, you can see the worm tubs glisten. These long snaking tubes cool the liquid and bring out a strong, meaty flavor. The result, a single malt that’s anything but smooth. Clove-studded baked apples. Sulphury cordite. Hefty, malty, mazy in the mouth. Bonnie Sweet, but with fire in its belly.
Tasting Notes by FWL Contributing Editor Uncle Knucklehead
Craigellachie is a small Speyside malt distillery that sends practically all its final product to Dewars for blending. This 13 year old is a 46% ABV with a sparkling goldenrod color that reveals that bourbon barrels were used to mature the whisky, revealing the lovely and soft vanilla and fruit notes that are translucent on the attack. The light smoke on the palate is a match to the meatiness of the malt, a result of the use of an old-fashioned worm tub as a condenser.
Craigellachie 13 Year Old Tasting Notes:
NOSE/AROMA: Notes of vanilla & fruit
PALATE: Meatiness with hints of smoke and a rich, chewiness that enhances the malty character
FINISH: Long and rich with warm fruitiness.
